Back to Blog
Happy New Year! We're back in the office and on deck focused on maximising your business' success in 2019. We had a wonderful break spent at home rejuvenating with friends and family. We treated ourselves to a fantastic evening at the Convention Centre where we watched Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back in concert with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra performing live to the film. Experiencing the film note by note before the orchestra really added momentum to an epic film, and will make watching future Star Wars films at home difficult!
We wish you every success in your business and financial endeavours for 2019!
Wynnum Business Christmas Lunch
We attended Wynnum Business' final meeting for the year, where we enjoyed a Christmas banquet at The Waterloo Bay Hotel. An overview of the group's plans for Wynnum Business in 2019 was given and we caught up with the other local businesses to learn what they also had in store for the next year.
The new book Farsighted: How We Make the Decisions That Matter the Most by Steven Johnson, media theorist and host of the American Innovation podcast, is rich with insights and is especially practical to those in business.
"Johnson makes a compelling case for a smarter and more deliberative decision-making approach. He argues that we choose better when we break out of the myopia of single-scale thinking and develop methods for considering all the factors involved."
For owners of SMEs, key decisions should not be made by one person (single-scale thinking). The smarter approach is having input from others (much like a management board), such as scheduling regular brainstorming and decision-making meetings with key staff and business advisers like myself.
To many, reading a book may seem near impossible these days, with 24/7 demands making us all so time-poor. But I believe the lessons in this book are so worth while that I encourage all my clients to set aside some time to spend with me going through these gems.

Welcome to the first post of our new blog. We are aiming to use this medium to engage more closely with our existing and prospective clients by demonstrating a bit about how we work, our interests and personal style. We hope you find this information useful and enjoy the read.

Wynnum Business Networking Breakfast
In mid-November we attended a networking breakfast hosted by Wynnum Business. The vibrant setting at Monty's Place in Glenora Street very much suited the theme of the event. Matt Dunstan delivered an insightful workshop on human centred design within product marketing.
The key takeaway was on the importance of really understanding the underlying purpose of why customers purchase a particular product or service. From the surface in most scenarios a customer's needs seem generic or obvious, these assumptions then form the basis of many marketing strategies. Matt showed this thinking often misses the mark. Once the customer's real needs are identified, matching or improving a business' services to suit is often simple and highly effective. We recommend watching this short five minute video Matt screened which beautifully demonstrates this concept - Understanding the Job by Clayton Christensen.
ATS Accountants Facebook Business Page Activity
At the start of November we upped our social media presence with the regular sharing of interesting articles from our favourite financial and innovation journals. Give our page a like so that our posts appear in your feed, or stop by once a week or so and catch up. We hope you find the articles interesting and relevant to your business.
Here's a selection of our favourite readings from November:
MONEY Magazine - 8 Things Successful People Do When They Don't Like Someone.
Business Insider - This $610 million real estate company doesn't have an office for its 13,000 agents and staff - instead, everybody works from this completely virtual island.
TIME Magazine - Bill Gates Says This Book Is 'One of the Most Important' He's Ever Read.
FORTUNE - The Sleep Habits of Successful Executives.
MYOB - Finding a great bookkeeper or accountant for your tradie business.
Finally, with Christmas just 3 weeks away, we would like to wish all our clients and visitors a very merry Christmas and happy holidays moving into 2019.
